Two of the top ten most cited OSHA violations are related to the control of hazardous energy and use of electrical work practices, which are defined in CFR 1910.147 and CFR 1910.333. Failure to perform proper mechanical or electrical LOTO can lead to electrocution, electrical shock, arc-flash and other hazards. Changes to NFPA 70E, 2018 standards recognized permanently installed devices in establishing and creating an electrically safe work condition (ESWC) by giving an exception in the Article 120.5.
